What’s involved

Faults that do not show themselves easily — the trip that pops at 3am, the socket that has been dead since the last decorator, the kitchen light that flickers when the kettle goes on — are mostly a process of elimination. We work through the circuit methodically with insulation resistance testing, earth fault loop testing and a long-lead voltage tester. We do not bodge it. If something is buried in the wall and cannot be accessed without making good, we tell you what we are about to break before we break it.

Common questions

• My RCD keeps tripping — can you find why?

  Yes — that is bread-and-butter. We isolate each circuit in turn and measure insulation resistance to identify the leaky circuit, then narrow down to the offending appliance, accessory or cable run.
• Half my sockets are dead — is that serious?

  Often it is a single loose terminal at one accessory taking out the whole ring or radial. We identify the break, rebuild the joint, and test the circuit.
• Lights flicker when an appliance comes on — normal?

  Mild momentary dim is sometimes normal on a long radial. Persistent flicker, or flicker that gets worse over time, points to a loose neutral somewhere — sometimes in the consumer unit, sometimes in the meter tails, occasionally outside the property. It is worth chasing down because loose neutrals can overheat.
• Do you charge for the diagnostic if you cannot fix it the same day?

  Yes — the diagnostic time is the work. We are open with you about what we have ruled out so the next visit (if any) goes faster.
• What about underground or buried faults?

  We can locate buried faults to within a metre or so with a long-lead tester. Once located, we tell you what would need lifting (floor, garden, drive) before any work starts.
