What’s involved

Lighting is the cheapest single change that transforms a room. We install LED downlights and panels, replace tired pendants, design layered kitchen lighting (under-cabinet plus general plus accent), fit dimmers that actually work with the lamps you bought, and run garden lighting on dedicated low-voltage circuits or 230V armoured cable as the job demands. We will tell you honestly if the lamps you have chosen will not dim smoothly with a particular dimmer — there is real engineering behind 'why does my LED flicker'.

Common questions

• Why do my LEDs flicker on a dimmer?

  Either the dimmer is leading-edge (designed for incandescent) and the LEDs need trailing-edge, or the LED driver is below the dimmer's minimum load. We pair lamps and dimmer correctly and the flicker disappears.
• Can you fit downlights in a room with insulated ceilings?

  Yes — we use fire-rated, IC-rated downlights designed to be in contact with insulation. Cheaper non-IC downlights need a clear gap above and are a fire risk if covered.
• Do I need an electrician for outdoor lighting?

  Yes if it is mains-powered. The cable needs to be SWA or run in correct conduit, the supply needs RCD protection, and the fittings need to be IP-rated for the location. We do this every week.
• How long does a typical downlight install take?

  6 ceiling downlights with new cabling and a switch: about 4–6 hours. Replacing existing downlights with new ones in the same locations: 2–3 hours.
• Will you make good after cutting holes in the ceiling?

  We cut precisely so the trim of the new fitting covers the hole. If we need to chase plaster for switch drops we fill (not finish-skim or paint). Skim and paint we leave to a decorator unless agreed beforehand.
